About Us

Our Historic Journey

1908
Foundation & Inception

The Basavanagudi Co-operative Society Ltd., located in Gandhibazar, Bengaluru, is a reputed consumer co-operative society. It was established during the old Mysore State period with the aim of providing fair-priced and high-quality consumer services to its members and the public. Since its inception, the consumer society has been functioning efficiently and has earned a strong reputation not only in Bengaluru but also across the state as one of the most trusted and well-known co-operative institutions.

The consumer society was founded in 1908 due to the efforts and dedication of the then distinguished leaders: Late. Sri Madhura Lakshminarayanaiah, Late. Sri T. Venkataramiah, and Late. Sri P. Madhava Rao.

1936
Visit by Mahatma Gandhi

During the lifetime of these great leaders, the consumer society celebrated its golden jubilee. An important milestone in the consumer  society’s history is that Mahatma Gandhi visited the consumer society on 11-06-1936, as recorded in the documents preserved by senior members. This is a matter of great pride and honour for the consumer society.

1958
Golden Jubilee Celebration

In 1958, on the occasion of its 50th anniversary, a grand celebration was held under the leadership of Late Sri P. S. Narayana Rao (President) and Late Sri B. N. Doreswamy (Honorary Secretary). The inauguration was conducted by Bharat Ratna Sir M. Vishweshwaraiah. Under his guidance and inspiration, the consumer society gained great recognition and prestige. During this period, the consumer society’s excellent consumer services were acknowledged, and it received appreciation and awards from the Mysore State Government.

2008-09
Achievements & Development

In 2008–09, under the leadership of Late Sri M. Boregowda, several development programs were implemented. The consumer society directly purchased and sold quality consumer goods at competitive prices. Even in the first year, the consumer consumer society achieved a turnover of about 1 crore rupees. The consumer society has wholesale units and own godowns in N.R. Colony and Jayanagar, and it carries out distribution through its own stores as per State Govt food department guidelines and directions in a planned and effective manner. Since the building's floors have been renovated, rent income has improved significantly.

2014
Grand Centenary Jubilee

In 2014, the centenary celebration was held under the gracious presence of Chief Minister Sri Siddaramaiah. On that occasion, the government sanctioned a grant of ₹15,00,000 for the consumer society's building development.

Present
Financial Strength & Public Service

Despite economic challenges, policy changes, competition, and other difficulties, the Basavanagudi Co-operative Society has continued to maintain its strength and serve its members regularly. For more than 20 years, the consumer society has been declaring 25% dividend to its members and the government share capital, which is a notable achievement in the co-operative sector.

From 2013–14 to 2024–25, the consumer society has paid 25% dividend to both members and government share capital. Every year, a total of ₹1,59,175 has been paid as dividend to the government. This regular dividend payment is an excellent example of the consumer society’s financial discipline and has increased trust among its members.
